    Dr. Stephen S. Pappas, Jr. is native to the Washington, DC area and has been in medical and surgical retinal practice for over 20 years. He is committed to providing personalized and compassionate retinal care and maintains expertise and current technology to customize innovative approaches for the latest retinal treatments. Dr. Pappas, Jr. works closely with each patient’s medical team to preserve and restore vision. Education and Training Dr. Pappas, Jr. holds a B.A. degree from Bucknell University and earned his Medical Degree (M.D.) from George Washington University in 1989. Following his Ophthalmology Residency at the Washington Hospital Center, he pursued and completed his Clinical Fellowship training in Vitreoretinal diseases and surgery at the Retina Institute of Maryland (now known as the National Retina Institute) in Baltimore, MD, where he performed clinical research and participated in landmark clinical trials investigating both medical and surgical retinal treatments. Upon completion of his training in 1995, Dr. Pappas, Jr. joined his father, one of the first fellowship-trained retina specialists in the Washington, DC area, in private group practice in Bethesda. In 2001, Dr. Pappas, Jr. founded the Center for Retinal Diseases and Surgery, LLC, where he continues the tradition of personalized, compassionate retinal care established by his father over 50 years ago. Leadership and Certification While very active in clinical practice, Dr. Pappas, Jr. was elected and served two consecutive terms as Chairman of Ophthalmology Surgery at Suburban Hospital in Bethesda, MD, from 1997-2003, overseeing the dramatic growth of its advanced vitreo-retinal surgery service. He was also elected President of the Washington, DC Metropolitan Ophthalmology Society in 2000 and served in that capacity for two years. Also that year he was elected as a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons (FACS). Dr. Pappas, Jr. maintains his board certification as mandated by the American Board of Ophthalmology and American Board of Medical Specialties and is an active member of the American Academy of Ophthalmology and American Society of Retina Specialists. He attends and has presented his clinical research in local, regional and national symposiums in ophthalmology and retinal diseases. Dr. Pappas, Jr. also holds a teaching position at Georgetown University/Washington Hospital Center Ophthalmology Residency and Vitreoretinal Fellowship programs. He has participated actively in many local community outreach programs such as those sponsored by the Prevention of Blindness Society of the Washington Metropolitan Area, Montgomery County, and other local organizations. Dr. Pappas, Jr. has been recognized on multiple occasions since 2004 as one of America’s Top Ophthalmologists by the Consumers’ Research Council of America and as one of Washington’s Top Doctors by Washingtonian Magazine in 2010 and 2012. Family Dr. Pappas, Jr. is married with two children and resides in Montgomery County where he has also served as a trustee for two non-profit organizations. Recreationally, Dr. Pappas, Jr. is an avid sports fan, enjoys travel, golf, skiing and holds a black belt in Tae Kwon Do.
